Speaking with Dr. Mike Friedman, the trio of Katie Gavin, Josette Maskin, and Naomi McPherson explore how the skills of love and acceptance are vital to our mental health journey as we work on the things that we would like to change. It’s easy to assume that we either accept ourselves and therefore don’t need to make changes, or we don’t accept ourselves, and that serves as motivation to make changes. This assumption can lead to a problematic cycle in which we engage in constant self-criticism in order to impel us to make improvements in our lives.
The band talks about how being more loving and accepting towards ourselves is a much better context for understanding and making change. Whether it’s improving our general mental health or understanding our gender identity or sexuality, we need to approach these issues from a place of compassion. That will allow us to be more patient and curious rather than harsh and critical, leading to a more virtuous cycle in which we can work on making necessary changes and build an affirming community around us.
